Our first destination is the vibrant city of Palermo, the capital of Sicily, where the warmth of the Mediterranean sun greets us upon landing.
As we step off the plane, the rich tapestry of Palermo’s history and culture invites us to explore its bustling streets, historic cities, and the unique blend of architectural styles that tell the stories of civilizations past.
This travel day marks the beginning of our exploration into a world where breathtaking scenery, centuries-old hilltop villages, and the iconic cuisine of this region promise an unforgettable experience.
Day 2: Saturday, June 15, 2024 – Palermo, Sicily - Tour Begins
Our Italian odyssey truly begins as we immerse ourselves in the heart of Palermo, Sicily’s pulsating capital.
This city, rich in history and brimming with life, unfolds before us in a mosaic of sights, sounds, and flavors. We delve into Palermo’s vibrant culture, embracing its gritty resilience and the captivating energy that radiates from its historic streets and lively markets.
The city’s eclectic mix of Norman, Byzantine, and Arab influences is evident in its stunning architecture and in the spirited conversations of its people.

															Day 3: Sunday, June 16, 2024 – Palermo – Cefalu – Palermo
Journey to the stunning seaside town of Cefalù, nestled along Sicily’s northern coast.
The charm of Cefalù captures us immediately, with its medieval streets winding towards the azure embrace of the sea. Accompanied by a local guide, we explore this enchanting town, each step revealing layers of history and beauty.
The highlight is the town’s impressive cathedral, a masterpiece of Norman architecture, its grandeur a testament to Sicily’s diverse cultural heritage.
Our adventure then takes us inland to a family-owned farmhouse, cradled by the lush Sicilian hills, where the true heart of this island beats. Here, we meet the owners, who welcome us into their world, offering insights into the rhythms of life on a Sicilian farm. The day culminates in a celebration of local flavors, as we sit down to a farm-to-table dinner, each dish a story told through family recipes passed down through generations.
Day 4: Monday, June 17, 2024 – Palermo -Monreale – Agrigento
Decide how you spend your day in the Sicilian capital.
Begin the day with a walking tour of Palermo’s old town. Uncover cobblestoned piazzas and ornate buildings, many worn by time and conflict. Visit hilltop Monreale (UNESCO), ascending on foot to its 12th-century cathedral for a guided tour of its majestic Byzantine mosaics.
Then, it’s your choice! Explore the cathedral’s cloisters, taking in their serene atmosphere of the monastic complex -OR- ascend the southern tower to the panoramic terraces for a bird’s-eye view over Palermo.
This afternoon relax aboard your bus as you travel over rolling hills and peaceful farmland to Sicily’s southern coast for a relaxing 2-night stay. Breakfast is included.
 
															 
															Day 5: Tuesday, June 18, 2024 – Agrigento  Valley of the Temples
Step back 25 centuries and delve into ancient Greek history for a visit of the stunning Valley of the Temples (UNESCO), one of the world’s most esteemed archeological site. Get an up-close view of the temples of Juno, Concordia, and Hercules during an extensive walking tour of this vast archeological site.
The afternoon is yours to relax. Perhaps you’ll venture into Agrigento’s old town or stroll along the beach close to your hotel, taking in the glittering Mediterranean Sea. This evening, pause for dinner at a local restaurant and an evening view of the illuminated Valley of the Temples.

Day 6: Wednesday, June 19, 2024 – Agrigento  Piazza Amerina - Giardini Naxos
Our expedition takes us into the heart of Sicily’s idyllic countryside, leading us to the historic town of Piazza Armerina.
Here lies the ancient Villa Romana del Casale, a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for its intricate and expansive mosaics that offer a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Roman elite.
An expert insider guides us through this remarkable site, allowing us to marvel at the detailed mosaics that adorn the floors, each piece narrating stories of Roman life and mythology with astonishing clarity and color.
Journey eastward towards the Ionian Coast, arriving at Giardini Naxos, often heralded as the “garden of Sicily.”

With an expert local guide, you’ll stroll the lively pedestrianized main street, see the imposing Corvaja Palace and climb to the city’s well-preserved Greek theatre.
The afternoon is yours to explore more of this hillside resort or opt to see Sicily’s wilder side on an off-road adventure to Mount Etna. During this optional tour, stare up at the iconic peak as your vehicle climbs along the sides of Europe’s largest active volcano.
Spend the day exploring this legendary giant, passing by lava formations and basalt rocks.

Day 8: Friday, June 21, 2024 – Giardini Naxos  Matera

Day 10: Sunday, June 23, 2024 – Matera  Pompeii  Sorrento
Our day begins with a visit to a sustainable buffalo farm, where we immerse ourselves in the art of mozzarella making.
Here, we savor the taste of freshly made mozzarella and delve into the storied history of this iconic Italian cheese, understanding its cultural significance and the dedication behind its production.
The journey continues as we arrive in the picturesque town of Sorrento, our home for the next two nights. Nestled atop cliffs that separate the town from its bustling marinas, Sorrento offers breathtaking views of the Bay of Naples.
In the afternoon, we take to the charming streets of Sorrento on a walking tour, uncovering the beauty of this seaside town.

Day 12: Tuesday, June 25, 2024 – Sorrento  Tour Ends
We head north towards the eternal city of Rome, carrying with us the rich tapestry of experiences from Southern Italy and Sicily.
Our route leads us to the remarkable UNESCO World Heritage site of Pompeii, where the echoes of the past resonate through the excavated ruins of this ancient Roman town.
Beneath the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, a local guide expertly navigates us through the remnants of 2,000-year-old streets, homes, and public spaces, offering an in-depth perspective on the daily lives of its inhabitants before the catastrophic eruption.
The latter part of the day sees us completing our transfer to Rome, arriving in the early evening to the bustling heart of this historic city. Our journey culminates in a festive farewell dinner at a local Roman restaurant, where we gather to celebrate our shared adventures and the memories we’ve created.

															Day 13: Wednesday, June 26, 2024 – Rome – Tour Ends OR Continue on Post Rome Tour Extension
This day marks the bittersweet conclusion of our grand Italian adventure, as we prepare to bid “arrivederci” to the captivating landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality that have defined our journey.
It’s our travel day back to the US, a time to reflect on the myriad experiences that have enriched our understanding and appreciation of Italy’s diverse regions.
From the vibrant streets of Palermo to the ancient ruins of Pompeii and the timeless beauty of Rome, each moment has contributed to a tapestry of memories that will linger long after our return.
As we make our way to the airport, the anticipation of home mingles with the nostalgia for the places and people we’ve encountered. For those embarking on the Post Rome Tour Extension, the adventure continues, promising further explorations and discoveries in the eternal city and beyond.
