June 2024 was a remarkable month for our travel group and the residents of Acadiana as we embarked on an unforgettable journey through Sicily and Italy. With 38 eager travelers from Louisiana and a few from afar, all connected to our beloved community, we created memories that left us with the desire for more adventures like this one.
This journey was a beautiful blend of cultural immersion, scenic wonders, culinary delights, Italy’s hidden gems and the joy of exploring with good company. From solo travelers to seasoned wanderers and first-timers, everyone was ready to make the most of this trip—prepared by the meetings, tips, and guidance Two Travel Gurus offered before departure.
Preparing for the Journey
We at Two Travel Gurus are not just about booking trips—we are about making sure every traveler feels ready and excited to embark on their journey. In the months leading up to June, we had group meetings that introduced everyone, built camaraderie, and helped answer questions. We discussed packing tips, foreign currency, cultural norms, and even a bit of language so our travelers could feel more comfortable saying “grazie” as they accepted their morning cappuccino or raised a toast with “salute” during dinner.
Our sessions on what to expect—from navigating airports to understanding local customs—groomed all our travelers to make the most out of every moment. It’s what helped make this experience so seamless and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of their previous travel experience.
Day 1: Arrival in Palermo
On June 15th, we touched down in Palermo, the lively capital of Sicily. Our stay at the NH Palermo Hotel was a wonderful start—a place that offered the comfort we needed after a long journey. That evening, we were welcomed in true Sicilian style, with a dinner that set the tone for our trip. The waitstaff were more than just servers; they put on a delightful show, made us laugh, and brought out the best local wines, ensuring we felt like honored guests.
Day 2: Discovering Palermo
June 16th was dedicated to exploring Palermo, which held particular significance for some of our group whose ancestors were from this historic city. Our city tour brought us to the Monreale Cathedral, a breathtaking example of Norman architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its stunning mosaics and panoramic views left us all in awe. Dinner that night at a local seafood restaurant was an experience to remember—with the owner greeting us personally, rounds of limoncello, and the freshest octopus we’ve ever tasted.
Day 3: Cefalù’s Charm
On June 17th, we visited the picturesque seaside town of Cefalù. With its medieval streets, vibrant market, and the magnificent Cefalù Cathedral, it was a morning filled with exploration and wonder. The countryside views, delicious wines, and warm hospitality made this stop a real highlight.
Day 8: Exploring Matera and Alberobello
June 22nd brought us to Matera, one of the most unique and breathtaking cities in Italy. The Sassi di Matera—ancient cave dwellings—were unlike anything we had ever seen, offering a glimpse into a way of life that dates back thousands of years. In Alberobello, we marveled at the iconic trulli houses. We explored the winding streets, shopped, and enjoyed gelato in the main piazza, feeling as if we had stepped into a fairytale.

Our stay at the Hotel Michelangelo was perfect, and our evening walking tour allowed us to fall in love with the charming town, its lemon-scented streets, and coastal views. Dinner at Terrazza delle Sirene offered stunning views over the Bay of Naples—and, of course, more fantastic food and wine.
