Hello from Sandra and Nancy at Two Travel Gurus! We’re thrilled to share our recent group journey through Europe’s most festive Christmas Markets on the Rhine. Our adventure, spanning from November 19 to December 2, 2023, took us through the heart of Europe’s winter wonderlands, aboard a 7-night riverboat cruise from Basel, Switzerland, to Amsterdam, Netherlands, and included enriching pre and post land tours extending to Bruges, Belgium.

Enchanting Rhine Riverboat Cruise mapDay 1 & 2: Zurich, Switzerland – Arrival and Exploration

Our European adventure started in Zurich, Switzerland. We stayed at the Hotel Glarnischhof by Trinity Hotel. Our first dinner at Zeughauskeller Restaurant introduced us to Zurich’s culinary delights, followed by a self-guided tour of the vibrant city.

We stored our luggage at the hotel until it was time to check in and hit the ground exploring the city.   We didn’t have much time, but managed lunch at a local cafe and toured Old Town (Altstadt):

Zurich features narrow, winding streets and squares lined with medieval and Renaissance buildings.  Lake Zurich: The scenic lake offered a beautiful backdrop for walking, picnicking, and boating. The promenade along the lake is perfect for leisurely strolls, with stunning views of the Alps on the horizon.  Bahnhofstrasse: One of the world’s most exclusive shopping streets, Bahnhofstrasse is home to high-end boutiques, department stores, and cafes. It stretches from the main train station to Lake Zurich.  Lindenhof: This peaceful, tree-lined square offers great views of the old town.

Day 3: Lucerne and Engelberg, Switzerland

Visiting Lucerne in Switzerland offers a variety of experiences, blending the charm of a small town with the sophistication of a city.  Lucerne is known for its breathtaking scenery, with the city sitting on Lake Lucerne and surrounded by mountains like Pilatus and Rigi.

The views are picturesque, perfect for photography and we enjoyed the rich in history and culture. The Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) and Water Tower are iconic landmarks and we were blessed to have been able to visit them. The old town is filled with medieval architecture, colorful buildings, and cobblestone streets.  We enjoyed traditional Swiss dishes like fondue, raclette, and Swiss chocolate.

The city has a variety of restaurants ranging from traditional to modern.  Lucerne has a range of shopping options from modern malls to boutique shops, where you can buy Swiss watches, chocolates, and souvenirs; these were all decorated for Christmas and so beautiful! Many of them were in the immediate vicinity of the Christmas Markets and it made it perfect for shopping.

In Engelberg, Switzerland, the majesty of the Swiss Alps was truly breathtaking.  There wasn’t anything that could prepare us for the stunning testament to their towering peaks which are blanketed in sparkling snow and ice. This winter wonderland is a panorama of glistening white, where the rugged mountain contours are softened under a shimmering snowy veil. The play of light casts a spectrum of colors across this landscape, from radiant whites to soft blues and pinks at dawn and dusk. Beyond their breathtaking beauty, the Alps stand as a timeless symbol of the earth’s majesty and power, offering a profound reminder of the awe-inspiring scale and serenity of the natural world. This mesmerizing scene, where each detail contributes to an overall sense of wonder, captures both the eye and the soul, showcasing nature’s extraordinary ability to awe and inspire.

The Engelberg Monastery, is a tranquil haven and steeped in history, offered a glimpse into monastic life amidst the tranquility of nature. The sight of monks in their traditional robes, amidst the ancient architecture and the stunning alpine scenery, was a serene and almost otherworldly experience.  We thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Monastery.

Engelberg Monastery’s picturesque setting in front of the Swiss Alps offers a visually stunning contrast: the timeless, man-made structure of the monastery juxtaposed against the ageless beauty of the mountains. This combination of human history and natural grandeur makes the Engelberg Monastery not just a religious landmark, but also a symbol of the enduring relationship between humanity and the natural world, inspiring both spiritual reflection and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the Earth.

Day 4: Basel, Switzerland

In Basel, we explored the Old Town and marveled at the Basel Minster. The vibrant Marktplatz and the stroll along the Rhine were picturesque, showcasing Basel’s unique blend of history and modernity.

Basel, Switzerland, charmed us with its blend of medieval charm and modern flair. We wandered through the Old Town with its narrow cobblestone streets, marveling at the well-preserved architecture like the Basel Minster, a stunning Gothic cathedral overlooking the Rhine. The vibrant Marktplatz, with its colorful Town Hall, provided a lively atmosphere, and our stroll along the riverbanks offered picturesque views of the city.

Our visit to Basel’s Christmas Markets was a highlight of our Rhine River tour, immersing us in a winter wonderland that felt like stepping into a storybook. The air was filled with the aroma of mulled wine and gingerbread, while twinkling lights and beautifully decorated stalls created a warm and inviting atmosphere. Basel’s unique location at the crossroads of three countries—Switzerland, Germany, and France—adds a delightful mix of cultural influences to its Christmas celebrations. Strolling through the market, we were captivated by the array of handcrafted gifts, from Swiss cuckoo clocks to delicate glass ornaments, each stall offering a glimpse into the region’s rich artisanal heritage.

The town is renowned for its vibrant arts scene, home to the world-famous Art Basel fair. Art enthusiasts will be delighted by the Kunstmuseum, which houses a significant collection of both ancient and contemporary art.

Christmas Market down the Rhine RiverDay 5: Riverboat Cruise Begins

Our riverboat cruise aboard the AmaLucia with AmaWaterways started on November 23.  In the morning, we checked out the hotel, then took a van to the port and left our bags with the AmaLucia employees; their responsibility was to get our luggage into our staterooms.  We then dedicated our afternoon to discovering even more of Basel’s Christmas markets and renowned sites, as our check-in wasn’t scheduled until 3 pm. The allure and offerings of the quaint town of Basel were simply irresistible to us.

The eclectic architecture of the city unfolded before us as we meandered through the narrow lanes of the Old Town, each turn revealing buildings that told stories of centuries past. A visit to the Basel Minster was awe-inspiring, with its striking red sandstone walls and twin spires dominating the city’s skyline, offering panoramic views of the Rhine.

Basel also enchanted us with its lush green spaces, like the Botanical Garden of the University of Basel, a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city. Our private guide took us for a city tour; one of our stops was the Tinguely Fountain, a playful and ingenious water feature showcasing the whimsical metal sculptures of Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. Our day concluded with a serene river cruise on the Rhine, allowing us to soak in the picturesque beauty of Basel from a different vantage point. Each of these experiences revealed a different facet of Basel, painting a picture of a city rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, far beyond just its Christmas markets

As our riverboat journey continued, we arrived in Freiburg, a gem nestled in the heart of the Black Forest region of Germany. Our 3 hour private van journey to Brugge was well worth it. Brugge’s medieval charm was evident in its canals, the Basilica of the Holy Blood, and the Belfry, providing a fairy tale-like end to our journey.

What truly set it apart, though, was the convenience it offered: while the men enjoyed the cozy ambiance inside, savoring more of the local brews, the ladies had the wonderful opportunity to step out and explore the shopping delights right outside the restaurant, in the bustling city square. This perfect arrangement allowed everyone to indulge in their preferred activities, all within the charming vicinity of our lunch spot.
